Manus x Machina: Magic at the Met

On Style

As a Fashionista, this exhibit was a must on my NYC to-do list. Visiting Manus x Machina at the Metropolitan Museum of Art totally changed my perspective on how I view clothing. I loved how the exhibit displayed fashion and clothing in the same way that they would any other form of art. Fashion is typically not considered art by many. But that’s what it is, wearable art, especially couture fashion. The exhibit showed how technology is impacting the world of creating clothes and how the hand (manus) meets the machine (machina). The shift from how everything used to be hand sewn to the incorporation of now tons of machine capabilities including 3D printing is stirring up massive changes and debates of how clothes are made. The exhibit aimed to show the amazing potential of these two forces working together rather than separately.

Coachella Dreamin’

Off Duty / On Style

As a person whose two main loves are music and fashion, Coachella is the ultimate mashup of my dreams. I have not physically attended yet, but I already have $20 saved to go next year (slow progress). I am determined to go next year assuming the lineup is as impressive as it always is! This year, amazing artists such as Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, The 1975, Sia, G-Eazy, Guns N’ Roses, Grimes, A$AP Rocky and many, many more are all playing. As a fan of the majority of the artists, I honestly can’t even imagine the struggle of choosing between stages, but that is a great problem to have. Here is the complete list.

Alex and Ani Jewelry Carries Weight

On Style

Alex and Ani bracelets are my current obsession. For Christmas this year, I finally received my first one. I had asked for the gold compass design bangle because compasses have always held strong symbolic meaning for me. I like to always think of my life with the idea of having the choice between the various directions that I can go in. Their bangles cost around $30 per piece, but they are very well made and adjust to perfectly fit your wrist. Each bracelet also comes with a brief explanation with Alex and Ani’s interpretation behind its meaning and the one for mine was spot on. Here is the caption from my bracelet.

Smart Style On a Budget

On Style

As a college student, I try to save money wherever I can. As a fashion lover and shopping addict, this becomes more difficult. The choice between wanting to invest on a splurge item and wanting to save your money can be a difficult decision. A good rule of thumb is to do the math and figure out the cost per wear (cost per wear= $ of the item/ the number of times you will wear it). For example, a purse is $500, but if you estimate you will wear it three days a week for at least four months, it comes out to around $13/per wear (but if it is a high-quality bag it will probably last much longer). In this case, the cost per wear can end up being a better deal than a $50 dress only worn once. It can be easy to get caught up when shopping, but making the process more rational will help to avoid acquiring those items in your closet that go untouched for months or years.
